I also felt disgust at reading the room’s reaction to Edmonia Lewis’s trauma. Their reaction fits neatly into the strong Black woman trope and completely ignores how being attacked by white supremacists impacted her physically, mentally, and emotionally. What happened to her was not empowering, it was racist and traumatic.

This was so incredibly written—not one word wasted!!!

I’ve thought a lot about museums as an unjust and oppressive institution to view art, and the exploitation of Black artists unfortunately coincides with that of Black curators. In searching for ways to create a way to access art in a liberated environment, there’s the consideration of galleries or exhibition rooms? But I often find that those also often have a seedy and exclusionary nature.

“ The profitability of art is not defined by creative excellence but by proximity to the dominant social structure. ” is soo REAL!! It’s so clearly reflected in the fashion, art, and music that is currently consumed. It’s as if the world is asking how close they can get to the culture without being Black and why Black artists who do end up making it into the structure can become so restrictive.

Clearly I could talk about this a lot. Sooo well done!! When is your book coming out??🤔

There’s definitely gonna be a part two to this piece because it’s so complex! The more I work in art spaces the more I learn how evil and laborious it is!

Girlll I’m tryna find a publisher on here 👀😂
